I was surprised when I used this quote and it wasn’t understood. After I explained, I was curious to know how the saying was defined online. urbandictionary.com reported

that the phrase, “Rob Peter to pay for Paul” meant, to take something from one source and use it towards another.

It stated: “Many folks believe that this metaphor has its origin in 16th-century England, when part of the estate of Saint Peter’s Cathedral in Westminster was appropriated to pay for repairs to Saint Paul’s in London.” The site gave an example: “Jacob: I think I’m going to apply for another credit card so I can pay off some of my bills.”

My conversation was along the lines of…”Don’t put pressure on your present relationship based on what other people in your past did to you. Judge people on how they behave and don’t let “Peter pay for Paul!’ Do you understand what I meant?
