Just One Wish!

If you had one wish that would be fulfilled, what would you wish for? The wishes of Caribbean people are similar to that of any other nation. The most popular answers are to be wealthy so as to afford the finer things in life. Along with riches is the wish for fame and glory, to have your name echoed across space and time.

Another is to be young and to live forever so you may never grow old and die. It may seem farfetched but there are many who fear death. Even though people may complain about daily life and living, no one wishes an early death or is in a rush to meet the Creator. Notwithstanding the few who commit suicide which is an extreme case.  Others would say eternal happiness, true love or to be reunited with a special someone.

It is always said that you are to be careful for what you wish for as you may receive it because the reality of obtaining that wish may not be all that you thought it would be. However, I rather have my wish becoming reality as in my opinion, experience is the best teacher. People’s experience, rationale and reactions to similar scenarios are very different. If I could have one wish granted, just one wish, what I would wish for? Thinking carefully, I would have to say that I wish I had the ability to read minds. Not riches, world peace, ending world hunger, cure for terminal diseases or immortality.

Before you guffaw at my choice, let me explain. With this ability, I have many choices as to what to do. I could gain wealth by working as a spy for the highest paying state. I could be a heroine to preserve truth and honour while helping to maintain justice in society. I would be able to identify when a political candidate is genuinely working for the country and not just rolling off promises that was never intended to be fulfilled. Be able to protect the innocent that are wrongfully accused and punish the guilty ones.

Make a wish...

Be a great diplomat or ambassador as I would be able to allow people to communicate better and avoid misunderstandings. Last, but certainly not least, know when my significant other is lying. You may not agree with my wish as it is often said that if everyone was to know the truth, then there would be no peace and that there are instances when it is better not to know the truth.

The popular cliché that ‘ignorance is bliss’ is one that I never agree with. It may be bliss, but knowledge is power and I rather have power which can lead me to bliss.
