These are long-oval or kidney shaped mangoes. They are the most well-known mangoes throughout Jamaica, and also the most prestigious due to their size and flavour. East-indians are luscious, juicy, sweet and very appetizing when they are very ripe which makes them the most marketable mangoes in Jamaica. In addition, they rarely have any worms or parasites but even if they do, it can be eaten as worms are very high in protein. They are very costly in comparison to other mangoes and neighbors are less willing to offer you an east-indian in comparison to other mangoes.
2. Blackie/Green gage/green skin
These mangoes are called blackie or green skin due to their dark green exterior or skin. They range from different sizes but are very small in comparison to an east-indian which may be 3 times their size. Their fibres are loaded with sweet succulent juices, you cannot just eat one, you must eat at least 3 or 4 to be satisfied. These mangoes are very much loved and they have become very popular with locals due to their unique flavor and their abundance. In addition, it is recommended that you do not attempt to “whiten” the seed as it may gnash your teeth and leave behind an acidic taste in the mouth. If you do not own a blackie tree, you don’t have to worry as they are very inexpensive and since they are abundant neighbours are always willing to share.
