“Ever since I was young, I’ve always been a mix-and-match maniac. But when I discovered the magic of matching everything WITH my head wrap, it was a wrap!” ~ Clara Baron

Introducing our newest feature, Clara ‘Queen Gigy’ Baron, a resident of Toronto, Canada who has been wearing wraps for 4 years.  I became interested in featuring Clara because her head wraps typically consists of crisp, straight lines, interesting curves and twists, and beautiful color combinations.  It is obvious that she makes a conscious effort to utilize colors and she does so effectively and artistically. This WrapStar shows us that a head wrap does not limit our appearances; instead it intensifies our most beautiful attributes and enhances our wardrobes.

Before we go any further with this interview/feature, I asked Clara to tell us about the name; I said,  “who is “Queen Gigy” and what does she stand for?

Furthermore, and maybe most importantly, is she a WrapStar?” I smiled. Clara responds by saying: “To begin, I believe that all women are Queens…I am a Queen…I’ve always been known to be someone extremely creative. “Gigy” (pronounced ‘Djee-Guee’) is just a nickname that I made up since probably my second or third year of high school.

It honestly has no specific meaning; it was just two easy syllables that sounded good in my ears, unique and original, like myself. Is she a WrapStar? I believe so, yes. Headwraps are my style and I embrace it to the fullest. I rarely go a day without wrapping my locs. I love to stand out and to be different. Having my locs wrapped in all kinds of colors and styles has definitely helped.”

That is very interesting, now that Clara has revealed the mysteries of “Queen Gigy” we can move on and learn more about this beautiful WrapStar. One of Clara’s passions is the arts and I like to say that her various styles are a reflection of those “stimulants”. She says; “I’m someone who is in love with any form of art.

It could be on a canvas stimulating my eyes, it could be on the radio stimulating my ears, it could be on a plate stimulating my taste buds or on a good book stimulating my brain.”

Ann-Marie: So, we now know that you are relatively new to head wrapping but you are definitely no amateur!  I would love to know why you wrap you hair?  What prompted your move into the world of WrapStardom?

Clara: “A couple of years ago, one of my dearest cousins passed away at the young and tender age of 26 years old. It was so unexpected and it took me an extremely long time to finally accept the fact that it was his time to go Home.

We always say ‘life is too short’ but sometimes it takes a situation to truly mean what we say. My cousin’s sudden death was it for me. Because I’m a natural woman, I’ve always had a fascination for locs ever since I could remember, but I never really had the guts to do them since it was a “lifetime” commitment.

To me, it was (and still is) the most beautiful hairstyle ever. It was when my cousin passed away that I told myself that life was too short to hold on to things and later on, to sing the famous “I would of, I could of, I should of” song. It was at that specific moment that I decided to loc my hair and started wrapping my hair to accentuate my bohemian style.”

Ann-Marie: Wow…my sincerest condolences on your loss.  (Pause)  It is awesome that you are able to deal with such a difficult situation and also find a way to apply a lesson to your life.  I would love to know what inspires your styles?

Clara: “Definitely the colors; matching my clothes with my head wrap along with the accessories is almost a religious thing to me. It is THAT important. Ever since I was young, I’ve always been a mix-and-match maniac. But when I discovered the magic of matching everything WITH my head wrap, it was a wrap!”

Ann-Marie: Actually, I couldn’t say anything in response to this because I spent so much time laughing at the imagery of a “mix-and-match maniac”.  So I gathered myself and asked Clara the next question: “Do you have a favorite style?”

Clara: “When I wrap my hair, 98% of the time I have at least 2 very distinct colors because I almost never dress in just one color. It has to match my clothes. I can wrap my hair with several scarves or one extremely long piece of fabric because I love it when the back of the headwrap is big and when the colors are bold.”

Ann-Marie: Ok, now for my absolute favorite question. What challenges, if any, have you faced concerning your head wraps? How do you handle or respond to challenges?

Clara: “None”
I paused for a moment, confused and waiting for more, but no words followed. So I said….”ummm, none? Like… NOTHING happened? THAT’S AWESOME!!!!  It was a pleasant surprise to learn that Clara has had a fairly smooth transition to WrapStar status and goes about her daily life without concerns about how other respond to her wraps.  But I had to inquire further because I had more questions.

So I said; “do you wear you wraps to work?”  To which Clara stated: “ I wrap my locs to go to work each and every single day. I think that I can count one hand the number of times that my coworkers saw me without a headwrap. Don’t get me wrong, I love my locs and I’m not trying to hide them at all. I just love the uniqueness of what headwraps bring to my style.

The comments and feedbacks that I have for my colorful headwraps are out of this world: nothing but positive. From co-workers to managers to even strangers, I’m getting compliments. And it warms my soul!& WrapStars”
