Wrap Star Ann-Marie Davy

“I am of Polish and Lithuanian decent, although born here in America. My ancestors wrapped their hair in kerchiefs. With much research I have come to know that mostly all women use to wrap or cover their hair in many situations and walks of life!” ~Dawn Marie Dillon

I don’t know about you, but I think another tripartite WrapStar treat is the best way to celebrate Women’s history month (March) and bring it to impactful closure. After all, March is the 3rd month of the year and in honor of women and 3s (lol), I introduce Dawn Marie Dillon and her princesses Elizabeth Nzinga, eldest and little Lalibella Ambessa.   Dawn is a mother of 4 and was born in Brooklyn but resides in Milford, Pennsylvania, USA.  She loves to knit and sew for herself, her family and others.  She also owns and operates Breathless Beauty Organic, Vegan & Natural Market, and says “nature is my inspiration to do anything and everything!”

Though fairly new to head wrapping, only wrapping consistently for about 8 months, Dawn is a Rastafarian and wraps for spiritual reasons.  She says “I have found myself getting deeper into my beliefs and livity. Although I know that being in the Rastafarian faith is not about what you look like outside it is about where your heart and mind are. I have decided that covering my hair most of the time is a must for me at this point in my life.  My head is my crown and is sacred, therefore it should not be shown to every and anyone. My head is wrapped all week and when the weekend rolls along that is when my husband is home and I sometimes let my hair out. At this moment my hair is only left uncovered when my husband is with me.”

Ann-Marie:   Why is it important that you leave your hair uncovered for your husband?

Dawn: …. I am more in depth with the life I have chosen as a Rastafarian woman. The deeper one seeks the King the overall being changes. But, it is a request he (my husband) makes at times. I now feel naked without my wrap so it is not often that I go out without one even when he is around but the significance of his request means a lot to me… he is my kingman and leaving it down if he requests is something I do not mind doing so I honor it for him.”

Dawn, owns over 48 head wraps and wears them with all her garments; changing the type of wrap with the seasons.  When asked about her favorite style of wrap, she says “I happen to love the crown method and Badu method. I have tried the bun but it’s not really for me. In the warmer weather I wrap with a mini or smaller wrap this way the top of my hair is out and it can breathe. In the cooler months I use a wider and longer piece of fabric to cover my whole head.”

Ann-Marie: What inspires your styles of head wrapping?

Dawn: “Inspiration comes from every aspect of life and every culture for me. I am of Polish and Lithuanian decent, although born here in America. My ancestors wrapped their hair in kerchiefs. With much research I have come to know that mostly all women use to wrap or cover their hair in many situations and walks of life.”

I was excited to see photos of Dawn’s daughters and to learn that they too wrap their hair on occasions. Elizabeth is ten years old and she is the elder of the two girls. She says: “I like it when it’s hot to get the hair off my face but normally I like my hair in just a pony tail. The wraps slide off my head too much”  I smile because many of our adult WrapStars have this same probably and are in search of solutions.

Little Lalibella is three years old and simply says: “I want to be like Mama”

Ann-Marie:  Have you faced any challenges when you wear wraps?

Dawn: “I live in the mountains of PA in a town that is not very diverse.  I face weird looks, comments and such everywhere I turn. I own a local store in my town and many people walk in and just drop their jaw and stare, some people ask me about it and many people say it’s beautiful.”

Ann-Marie: How do you handle or respond to challenges?

Dawn:  “I really do not pay attention to people’s reactions, however, if they comment I will comment kindly back saying something like: ‘not everyone was put here to look the same and act the same, many are called but few are chosen’. That usually stops all comments. I also will not look away from a stare, I just stare back and smile.”

(Smiles) I can visualize that scene unfolding.
