Guyana Police Commissioner Under Pressure to Resign

Guyana’s Police Commissioner Henry Greene is facing mounting pressure to resign over rape allegations.

Several non-governmental organisations in Guyana have raised questions about Mr Greene’s tenure after he admitted having sex with a 34-year-old woman who is now accusing him of rape.

The minority opposition party, Alliance For Change, AFC, and the Guyana Association of Women Lawyers have called for Mr Greene to either resign or be fired, saying he has lost the moral authority to lead the Guyana Police Force.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has already recommended that the police chief be charged with rape arising from the woman’s allegations.

However, the Guyanese High Court has granted an injunction sought by Mr Greene temporarily barring acting Police Commissioner Leroy Brummel and Assistant Commissioner Seelall Persaud from bringing charges against him.

Mr Greene has admitted to having consensual sex with the woman who had gone to his office seeking his intervention in an investigation that involved her.
