Grenada Port Workers Strike

Date:

Operations at Grenada’s three ports were disrupted earlier today, after workers went on strike because the Port Authority missed Monday’s deadline to pay EC9,000 in an arbitration settlement.

An arbitration tribunal awarded the payment to the workers in 2007 with a deadline of October 31, 2011 for payment of the final amount.

The strike has affected all three of the nation’s sea ports at St. George’s, St. Andrew’s and on the ward island of Carriacou.

The Technical and Allied Workers Union said the workers will stay off the job indefinitely.

In a statement, the union said the port authority had also refused to sign the agreement it made with the union and a joint consultative committee set up by the arbitrators.
