Dr. Carolyn Cooper; Kartel’s surrogate mother…

When it was first announced that Vybz Kartel would give a public lecture at the University of the West Indies, Mona; I will admit that I was a bit skeptical about it. He was Dr. Cooper’s specially invited guest; as she is in charge of a course called Reggae Poetry and one of its components is to invite reggae and dancehall music artists to speak about their music.

So, we can say that this episode was their relationship in its embryonic stage. So, now we are seeing where the relationship has developed to such a level that Kartel is writing a letter to Cooper from behind the prison walls.

However, being the ever suspicious person that I am; I am a bit doubtful about this relationship. I do not doubt the legitimacy of the letter; I just doubt their relationship as just another public stunt to garner media attention.

In her weekly column Dr. Cooper reported that a little boy saw her at a function and asked her if Kartel was her son because apparently he saw her giving an interview in which she was “defending” Kartel.

Further in her article she gave an excerpt of the letter that was written by Kartel addressed to her:

Dr. Carolyn Cooper

“Dear Ms. Cooper,

Good day to you and I hope you are in the best of health and the highest of spirits, but I am not. Ms. Cooper as you know I am in jail on numerous charges and I’d like to tell you that I am an innocent man who needs your help because I’m being painted as this evil DJ by day, don by night and murderer who is society’s number one cause of crime and violence…” and so the letter went.

My question; is this just some cheap fiasco for ten minutes of laughter or is she genuine about her concerns for the welfare of Kartel.  What do you think?
