Grenada Carnival Queen, Cherrie Jones, has been kept busy since her national victory at Carnival City on Thursday August 4, 2011 at the Netherlands Insurance National Carnival Queen Pageant. In recent time, the monarch has been using her vocation as a chef to keep active in local charities including involvement with the ladies at the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association) and at the Desk for Senior Citizens. On Thursday October 27, the 26-year-old pageant winner volunteered at the Desk of Senior Citizens where she assisted in the kitchen and interacted with the elderly visiting on that day. The Desk of The Elderly is set up by the Ministry Social Development to achieve and maintain an improved quality of life for older persons in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique by providing efficient quality services in collaboration with other Ministries and stakeholders.
Speaking to the press, Miss Jones expressed her appreciation for the role the elderly played in the development of the country. In contrasting people of her youthful age group and those of the elderly, she quipped “…beautiful young faces are accidents of nature, but beautiful old faces are a work of art.” She explains that it is the elderly who helped pave the way for her success and sees her contribution to them as a way of paying back. The TAMCC hospitality graduate had only recently officially received her prize from the Grenada Carnival Committee at a simple ceremony at the national Stadium on Monday October 24. The ceremony recognized the top three winners of the major contests of the carnival season.
Currently chef-de-parti at the prestigious University Club (the fine-dining restaurant of St. George’s University), Miss Jones is currently in negotiations to take on temporary special assignment to conduct in-house staff training at a well-known culinary establishment where they are embarking on the introduction of a new line pastries and desserts.
Her involvement with the national arm of the YWCA hinges on her vocation as well, and she would be making and donating pastries for their fund-raising breakfast sale later this month. She would also be helping to organise their annual Christmas Party for the children at La Colome in St. David during December as part of her YWCA project.
Additionally, Miss Carnival Queen 2011 is expected on November 19th to make an appearance at Youth Sports Day in St. Patrick’s, organise a fashion show at the Youth Expo at the Trade Centre on November 26, and would culminate the 2011 with handing over an award and scholarship at the Annual Youth Awards at the Trade Centre on December 4.
