Caribbean news. With the Meteorological Office predicting continued drought conditions for Antigua and Barbuda, Prime Minister, the Hon Gaston Browne, is assuring the country that despite the challenges brought by the lack of adequate rainfall, his government is determined to ensure that water is available for households.
Information coming out of the Met Office speaks to a continuation of the drought conditions into the foreseeable future. Against this background, Prime Minister Browne said remedial measures have been put in place to assist with the situation.
The measures include securing additional reverse osmosis plants to meet the shortfall from reducing surface water and wells. One such plant has been earmarked for the English Harbour area which is expected to become operational shortly. That plant is expected to serve both residents in the surrounding communities as well as for the yachting community. As many would know, the yachting community and industry is vital in several contexts of the area and in the country’s economy.
The Prime Minister is confident that the country will be in good standing within the coming months now that the Government is also sourcing water from a plant that formed part of the Stanford Developments. PM Browne revealed that the Government is also improving its relationship with the main water supplier, Sempcorp Ltd. and Cabinet is bent on reducing its indebtedness to the company which had previously been allowed to accumulate without a serious plan to reverse the trend. Browne reminded that since taking office last June, the Government has been able to bring down the debt significantly. This has allowed the company to increase its water supply to the APUA.
