By now we have all heard about the death of radio host, Wilmot “Mutty” Perkins.  Mr. Perkins was not one to mince words.  He has made some infamous statements, such as referring to the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus as an intellectual ghetto.  For sure, Mutty stepped on some corns during his time on radio, mainly those of politicians.

Since his death I have heard persons saying he was like a defender of the people.  However, during his time as radio host, which was right up to the time of his death, the popular belief was that he was anti-PNP (People’s National Party).  In the early 2000s, he apparently had a beef with, then radio host Ronald Thwaites who at the time made clear, his political preference.  Mr. Thwaites is now a Member of Parliament for the PNP and now serves in the cabinet of the PNP led government, as Minister of Education.

They say not to speak ill of the dead and former Prime Minister, Percival James Patterson was certainly abiding by that statement, when asked if he thought Mutty was anti PNP.  His response was no.  I wonder if Minister Thwaites would respond the same.

Even though, Mr. Perkins was not popular with a lot of persons, he still had high listenership to his radio programme, Perkins online.  There were those who listened because they were genuine fans of him and his programme and there were those who listened, for a reason to hate him even more.  What can I say; he was the man a lot of persons loved to hate.  One thing is for sure, loved him or hated him; he will be missed by both his lovers and his haters.

Mr. Perkins died in February after a long illness.  He had been suffering from leukemia for years.
