The
The Caribbean Waterbird Census was established by the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds in an effort to learn more about the distribution, status, and abundance of waterbirds in the Caribbean and to improve regional and national conservation planning and management of these magnificent and beautiful birds and their habitats. This year, islands across the Caribbean have scheduled census activities between 19 January and 3 February.
This Anguilla census will take place on Thursday 2 February, World Wetlands Day. World Wetlands Day celebrates the 1971 signing of the Convention on Wetlands that took place in the Iranian city of Ramsar. World Wetlands Day was first celebrated in 1997 and since then, government agencies, nongovernmental organisations, and citizens alike throughout the world take part in activities that raise awareness of the importance and value of these fragile ecosystems.
For this year’s activity, the ANT invites its members to conduct a count at Road Salt Pond, arguably Anguilla’s most prolific wetland bird area. Members will be provided with binoculars and bird cards, will participate in a short bird identification session, and take part in a count of the wetland birds.
We will meet at the southeast corner of Road Salt Pond, close to the playing field, at 4.30pm. This activity is free of charge to all ANT members. For individuals who are not members but who would like to take part in the activity, a one-year membership fee of US can be paid to the ANT. Please contact the National Trust at 497 5297 to register.
