It’s All About Achievement, Not Activity

When I used to be a nurse, a colleague once said to me “You see that nurse over there, she walks 100mph up and down the ward, looking so busy, but she hardly gets anything done, that’s why she’s always tired!”

It was a cheeky comment, but it reminded me of the expression “Don’t be busy for no reason”, which basically means, if you’re going to break a sweat or spend your time and money doing anything, make sure you have a reason for doing it or don’t bother.

If you’re a salesmen, going out to 20 sales visits a week for weeks on end and not closing any deals, and you’re paid commission only, your busyness won’t keep you employed for very long.

An Entrepreneur or business owner will soon feel the impact of busying themselves with sharpening pencils, spending weeks tweaking their business card, alphabetically sorting all the files on their shelves, choosing just the right paper to print their invoices on and spending far too long on their social networks getting engaged in intense “important” discussions, when they don’t make enough money every month to stay afloat.

The joyful high of finally having an immaculately clean kitchen, that’s has taken you 4 hours to complete will soon fade, when you’re only left with an hour to do all the washing, cooking vacuuming and make the dinner before the children get home.

And then we have my favourite examples of gyms and diets

A lady I worked with went to 1 hour intense aerobic class twice  a week for 6 months and lost 5lbs and 1 dress size, so she increased it to 4 one hour classes a week for another 3 months and lost nothing at all (apart from a lot of money in classes)

We’ve all heard of someone who religiously calorie counted, weighed, measured and drastically restricted their diet for months only to lose about 10lbs, then gain it all back again after a few days of eating their forbidden foods.

This is the epitome of being busy for no reason.

Remember, If you start wrong you end wrong, so make sure you start work with a goal in mind that you can test and measure and don’t for one minute let the amount of work involved determine how effective you think it is, some of the most effective things you’ll achieve in life will be done with a 2 second mindset change, making a decision, or finding a system that works and sticking to it, and not necessarily hours of grafting.

So before you get busy, set a goal, do your research into the process you’re going to use to achieve it, test the process and measure the results you’re getting using it.

If you’ve honestly stuck to the plan, done everything recommended and still aren’t getting results, don’t be afraid to change the plan.

If you’re at all spiritually minded, you’ll also know that life, your body and your guides have a habit of giving you signs, clues and warnings associated with different situations.  Whether it’s sending people to you who can help you achieve your goals, or putting massive obstacles between you and a choice that’s not right for you, so keep your eyes and ears open for these little gifts.

For now, take care, stay healthy and remember, it’s all about achievement, not activity.
