The St Lucia Diabetes Project team (SLDP) from the UK arrived in Saint Lucia on 18th March 2022. The team consisted of Mary Matthias, the Chairperson of the SLDP,  Dr Benoit Charles, deputy chair of SLDP, Jenny Bentley, retired senior lecturer of King’s College London and Kumal Rajpaul, Deputy Chief Nurse at Hounslow & Richmond NHS Trust.

The training programme they ran was on Diabetes, wounds and foot care.

The first week was hosted by Sir Arthur Lewis College nursing department and the second week by St Jude Hospital in Vieux Fort.  The course participants at both Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) and St Jude hospital were from both the community and the hospitals and consisted of both doctors and nurses.

A one day programme which looked at ‘Diabetic Foot Care’ was held at St Jude’s as well as a programme for the health professionals  which looked at aspects of diabetic wound management.  Those who attended came from all around the island.

Mary Matthias said “We were very pleased with the way our programme has gone. The feedback we have received is great and we are so pleased to know that we are making a difference”.
We would like to thank the Metropolitan & Athletic Club for their monetary donation which assisted in the purchase of some badly needed equipment for the SALCC, nursing department.
