On October 7th 2011, The Nobel Peace Prize 2011 was awarded in three equal parts to Ellen Johnnson Sirleaf, President of Liberia, Leymah Gbowee also of Liberia and Tawakkol Karman of Yemen.  A video of the announcement by Thorbjørn Jagland, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee is available on http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2011/announcement.html.

My pride abounds for all the obvious reasons, they are women and they are WrapStars!  Yet, I am also motived and inspired by their selfless determination in making important changes for women’s rights and for peace.  According to the Nobel Peace Prize organization, these women were awarded for  “their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work” (1).

president who has done per part to secure peace in Liberia.  Her efforts include promiting social and economic development and strengthening the position of women (2).

“Peace Warrior” Leymah Gbowee, also of Liberia, organized and mobilized women across ethnic and religious dividing lines to bring an end to the long war in Liberia, and to ensure women’s participation in elections (2).  During and after the war, she has worked to heighten the influence of women in West Africa.

Known in Yemen as the” mother of the revolution” Tawakkul Karman was chosen for her leading role for women’s rights, democracy, and peace in Yemen. She is a journalist and a 32-yr old mother of three who has lead the fight to overthrow the 3 decade rule of the Yemen President.

To say these spectacular WrapStars are doing their part of women’s rights is an understatement. In my opinion, they have gone above and beyond, risking their lives and leaving an incredible legacy for generations to follow. More importantly, they have made a significant contributions for women’s rights, democracy, and peace.

Please join me in thanking and saluting these remarkable WrapStars, women, and Nobel Peace Prize Winners!
