Spirituality. The word humble is derived from the Latin word humilis which means low, grounded, modest, and not showing off. Lately, I’ve become familiar with the word humble as I have recently moved from America back to England to live with my Father and family.
That had to be one of the hardest things for me to do because in America I had a good job, a car, fancy clothes, I had friends, attended exclusive events, wrote articles about prominent Church leaders, Politicians, and Community Organizations. I thought I had it all but, the one thing I lacked was humility.
There was a moment when I woke up and evaluated the quality of my life. I wanted more out of life and I didn’t know where to start so I prayed. The Bible reads in 2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” I left my comfort zone and entered an unfamiliar place, my birth place of London.
At first my pride interfered with me being able to receive love, guidance, and support from others. I thought to myself ” I am a strong, self sufficient, independent, adult I don’t need help from anybody!” But, reality set in and I realized I am human just like everybody else.
Everyone especially immigrants need help. “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” James 4:10. No matter who you are, your occupational status, or how much money you make you must humble yourself. Rebuke the spirit of self idolatry in Jesus’s name.
Let God be the center of your life. “He must increase, but I must decrease” John 3:30 and Proverbs 15:33 “The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.” So, give up the pride and take a slice of humble pie.
