Queen of the Dancehall Spice combines history and visual effects to give her Frenz music video plenty of cinematic drama. The Dancehall star debuted the project on Angela Yee’s talk show Lip Service on Tuesday February 23rd, 2021.
The long-form music video portrays a young Spice being warned by her mother to stay away from friends. The visual updates to modern times, showing two examples of friends betraying each other. The first scene centres on men playing dominoes and the second depicts a youth who is set-up and loses his life. While both scenes play out, Spice is seen standing within view, as if to foreshadow to both the characters that the betrayal is coming.
While these scenes play out, Spice juxtaposes her own experiences graphically to include knives and scissors in her back. The theatrical display was conceptualized by Spice who co-directed the piece.
“I wanted to demonstrate that each time a person betrays me, it is literally a knife or scissors in my back.” Heightening the dramatic effect, Spice draws on the French story of Marie-Antionette who was burned at the stake.
The song “Frenz” is hopeful and intended to encourage listeners who may be facing adversity. About the song Spice adds “even though there is betrayal in friendships, relationships or situations, there is good. The goal of the song is to help people realize who will betray them before the betrayal happens so they can avoid heartache.”
Prior to the release of “Frenz,” the Dancehall and reality TV star released “Inches.” Both tracks are VP Records releases. All enquiries [email protected]
