Nigel Sylvester was raised in a strict Grenadian household in the Southside area of Jamaica Queens but his story is different from the typical stories we read about people of Caribbean descent.

In a uniquely intimate conversation with VICE Autobiographies, Nigel Sylvester shares the pivotal moment that ignited his rise in the world of BMX and the challenges he faced along the way.

Here is interview with Vice

And just to show how his Grenadian parents have influence his life, here is what Sylvester had to say,

“My parents are both from Grenada, so most of the time Grenadian parents are very strict. It’s a very strict culture, very rigid. You go to school, graduate, get a job, have a family. That’s it”

The 29-year-old athlete was raised in a strict Grenadian household in the Southside area of Jamaica Queens.

For Nigel, becoming a BMX rider was not something that was to be expected in his household. His parents wanted him to attend college and have a successful, traditional career but Nigel took a different path.

His story is a great inspiration to all Caribbean kids searching for direction and a sense of purpose. His story shows us that you can be whatever you want to be, if you believe in yourself.
