Kamla to Launch 50th Independence Anniversary Celebrations

Kamla Persad-Bissessar will this evening launch celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Independence of Trinidad and Tobago.

Celebrations, which will begin this month, are expected to continue until December. Cabinet has approved a range of programmes and activities which will take place across the country throughout the remainder of the year.

The Prime Minister will launch the celebrations at 5 p.m. this evening at Queen’s Hall, Port of Spain in a formal ceremony that will include a number of cultural items by artistes such as pannist Clive Telemaque, vocalist Wendy Shepherd, calypsonians Baron and Devon Seale and dancer Susan Mohip and her dance company.

The Ministry of Planning and the Economy announced that there will also be performances by the Minister of the Arts and Multiculturalism, Winston “Gypsy” Peters and other artistes including the Central Rhythm Tassa Drummers, La Danse Caraibe and Laventille Rhythm Section .

The Planning and Economy Ministry has also announced a number of free 90-minute concerts at the National Academy of the Performing Arts (NAPA), starting with a performance by the Lydians on Wednesday.

Other artists scheduled for these 90-minute performances are Ray Holman and Band, Mungal Patasar and Pantar, David Rudder, a night of Indian Classical Singing and the Trinidad and Tobago Youth Philharmonic.

At today’s ceremonial launch, the Prime Minister is expected to unveil the winning logo, selected from more than 600 entries in a public call for submissions for images that best depict the theme of Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.
