Social commentary. How many of you have been thought to be from a Caribbean country based on your complexion, accent, attitude or some other reason that makes absolutely no sense? It comes as no surprise that Jamaicans are more generally the prime targets for this sort of stereotypical classification. If you don’t say Yeh Mon after every sentence you can’t be Jamaican; if you don’t look like Bob Marley you can’t be Jamaican and of course my all time favourite, if you don’t smoke weed you can’t possibly be Jamaican!
If it’s any consolation to Jamaicans, the rest of the Caribbean are in many ways stereotyped in a manner that some believe is more painful and it’s when you tell an Englishman or woman you’re from the Caribbean and their immediate response is, ‘So what part of Jamaica are you from!?’
