“I’m
Olivia Musiatowicz is this week’s featured WrapStar for her chic, beautiful, and artistically inspired style of head wrapping. One of her greatest inspirations is the music which surrounds her and as booking manager for Positive Music Promotion; the organizers for Ostroda Reggae Festival in Poland, she has great exposure to rhythmic muses. About her love for music, she says; “Music is my life, it made me who I am now… (Music) lets me explore regions of my soul that used to be invisible.” When I asked the Poland native to describe herself, she passionately declares: “I’m the compilation of sounds & colors – palette of diversities…that’s what I am.” Oliva is also an Occupational Therapist who works with mentally disabled adults.
Now that you know some background information on Olivia, let’s explore the WrapStar element of her personality. So I had to ask; “Olivia, why do you wrap your hair and what inspires your particular style of head wrapping? To which she answers: “During the winter or autumn, I wrap due to harsh weather conditions but then it’s a part of my outfit as well. It (head wrapping) is so natural that when I wrap my head I don’t even think why.” She smiles. Olivia, who has worn wraps since she was 16yrs old, uses a multitude of fabric types and colors that she usually coordinates to match her clothing. In response to my question about inspiration, Olivia states; “When I was a little girl I spent hours watching old magazines presenting beautiful African Women wearing colorful head wraps. Nowadays, I would have to ask myself what doesn’t inspire me?” She smiles and goes on to say: “It also depends on my mood. I live in country where winter is hard to stand, everything looks grey, trees without leaves, etc..etc.…so what I wear and how I wear it, changes the way I perceive reality around me. Diversity is the key, similar to music; one note won’t make a beautiful song.” Similar to her reasons and inspiration for wrapping, Olivias’ style of head wrapping is dependent on such factors as her mood and her attire. As you can see from her photos, she has locks which are heavy at times, so instead of using a fabric to wrap her head, she says “sometimes I wrap my head with my locks”.
Now for this writers’ favorite question in the series; “Olivia, have you faced any challenges in regards to wrapping your hair? She states: “U see, we live in the world of diversities but still otherness causes anger – sometimes otherness causes curiosity. Where I live, reactions are different, sometimes people laugh, sometimes they are aggressive, and sometimes they say they really dig it.”
Ann-Marie: Sorry to interrupt, but curiosity implores me to ask, what kind of “aggressive” behavior are you referring to?
Olivia: “I meant verbal aggression, I experienced physical aggression twice and it was years ago when i was an innocent teenager.”
Ann-Marie: Physical aggression because you wrap your hair?
Olivia: “well years ago looking different was a reason to be attacked…I had dreadlocks and my locks were wrapped, the guy who kicked me was skinhead….”
Ann-Marie: How did you get away from him? Did anyone help you?
Olivia: “He kicked me three times in my back and I fell to the ground in pain, he went on to attack others in the train station….. I wasn’t that lucky, no on helped me, I suppose they were afraid of him…..”
She further explains: “People are afraid of what they don’t understand, doesn’t matter if we talk about words, clothes, music, art, or disabilities… I work with mentally disabled adults and they know better what lack of understanding & respect inside the society means. And fears among other things cause aggression. It’s easy for some to laugh, reject or discriminate, same time it’s a challenge to understand and respect. Still. I truly believe that sooner or later there will be more who see more inspiration in other people than reasons that will make them reject otherness.” Profound words from an amazing WrapStar who has obviously overcome some major challenges on her journey.
