Wrap Star Ann-Marie Davy

“I don’t ever feel the need to match my outfits with my head wraps. When it comes to head wraps, I don’t ever feel the need to conform.” ~Eno Georgette Inwek

If you have ever watched The Africa Channel, you are definitely familiar with, Eno Georgette Inwek, our featured WrapStar for this week.  She is a resident of Los Angeles, California, USA who is originally from Nigeria, West Africa.  Her choice of bold beautiful colors and statement jewelry are just a few of the elements that make her a WrapStar.  This amazing woman is also a Motivational Speaker, Humorist, and Entrepreneur who has launched her own jewelry line featuring stylish and inexpensive pieces for “the fashion conscious woman”.

If you have not yet seen her on the African Channel, undoubtedly you will soon see one of her performances, interviews, or motivational speaking presentations.  Dubbed “Africa’s Ambassador of Possibility” because of her passion for inspiring others, she asserts: “My biggest passion, what I was called to do in life is to be an inspiration to people. My job is to make a positive impact in the lives of everyone that I come across to the best of my ability, by teaching them my one philosophy- Overcome life’s obstacles and find your life’s purpose.”   Clearly, we can understand why she is called an ambassador of possibility.

Essentially, Eno wraps her hair because she likes the way she looks in them but she also wraps for many other reasons. In our interview, she declares “I feel different from everyone else. I feel and look regal. I feel it is a way that I pay homage to my grandmother who always wore a scarf. It is very much a part of my heritage. Then there are those days that I wrap my hair because it is simply a hot mess, truth be told. You don’t want to see my hair those days!”  Do you see the humorist speaker here?  I do.    Eno has worn scarves for as long as she can remember; which is definitely a reflection of her cultural heritage and her family history.  Her style of head wrapping is inspired by her mood, she adds;  “There are times that I feel like wearing a big scarf and there are other days that I opt for something more subtle.” I can attest to  having similar moments as Eno. Can you?  Eno prefers a simple yet elegant wrap that double ties on the top of the head.

One of my favorite characteristics of Eno’s head wrapping style is that she does not feel constrained to match her head wrap with her outfits.   She explains: “I don’t ever feel the need to match my outfits with my head wraps. When it comes to head wraps, I don’t ever feel the need to conform. That does not always sit well with certain people.  I recall one person telling me to stop wearing head wraps to my seminars because it would ‘scare the Americans’.”  This is the perfect segue into a discussion of the challenges Eno has either had to overcome or succumb to.

I asked her to tell us of her challenges and how she handles them.   In the words of Eno: “The one that comes to mind was when I was working at my last place of employment, after 4 years of working there, my African American manager came up to me one day and asked me to write an essay that would be filed with Human Resources, explaining why I had to wear a scarf. I am not sure what she wanted me to write in that essay, but I never needed to. It turned out that the company had no issue with my wrapping my hair. It was her personal issue. It is my belief that if a person has issue with what another person wears, especially with head wraps, hijabs etc, it is a reflection of their own low self-esteem and misplaced priorities.  How do I handle such challenges? I keep wrapping my hair!” We can easily conclude that Eno does not succumb to the challenges; she has faced them head on and continues to be a WrapStar despite those who may oppose.
