Grenada’s 50th anniversary of Independence highlights a journey that has shaped the course of our history and defined our identity as a nation – a journey filled with trials, triumphs, and an unyielding spirit of resilience. A journey that our fore-parents, in their quest for freedom and self-determination, stood shoulder to shoulder, undaunted by the challenges they faced.
Our fore-parents dreamt of a nation where our people could determine their own destiny, a society where justice and equality would be the foundation. They dreamt of a nation where the flag we raise today would represent our collective dreams and aspirations.
As One People, we must learn from the lessons of our past and honour the memories of those who paved the way for our freedom and acknowledge the responsibilities that come with it.
In reflecting on our Journey, let us remember the forthrightness of Sir Eric Matthew Gairy and the role he played in raising the socio-political consciousness of the Grenadian people—from adult suffrage in 1951 to gaining our independence in 1974. Let us honour the resilience and strength of our people which have truly defined our rich history. The hard work and the progress made by young people during the Grenadian revolution will be forever etched in our memories.
It is against this historical backdrop, having acknowledged and learned from our shortcomings, that we will forge our Future and make way for new leaders to emerge.
Let our golden jubilee celebrations be defined by our choice as a people to foster unity and national pride. In this way, we will continue to work toward a society, where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive.
I therefore encourage Grenadians living in the United Kingdom to envision the next 50 years as we aspire, build, and advance as one people. From the struggles that forged our identity to the triumphs that will propel us forward. May the next 50 years be filled with continued growth and prosperity as one people, one journey and one future. Let us together, inspire the next generation who can shape this world and our beloved Grenada in ways that our forefathers have only imagined.
Hail Grenada, land of ours! Happy 50, Grenada!
