Lloyd says Gayle should apologize to the WICB as it would not make him any less of a man.
But Holding says Lloyd, a former West Indies captain, has no moral ground on which to call for Gayle to apologize.
“About two years before the (ICC Cricket) World Cup that was in the Caribbean, when Ken Gordon was the president of the WICB, we had a big furore between myself and Gordon. Lloyd put his nose into it, trying to defend Gordon and said something which was incorrect. I showed him that he was incorrect and it was even on cricinfo.com where I used a WICB press release and an article written by a friend of his in Guyana to show him that he was incorrect (and) he needed to apologise to me for (which) he has not yet (done).
“Lloyd was like my second father when I [played for the West Indies … I have not spoken to West Indies in eight years because of that and he’s now telling Chris Gayle to apologise as it does not make him a smaller man, then why hasn’t he apologized to me in eight years?” asked Holding.
COMMENTS:
Clive Lloyd captained West Indies Cricket with honour. He was an astute leader. I am surprised that he has taken the stance of advising Chris Gayle to apologize to WICB. Clive may wish to take a look at Michael Holding’s view on the matter some days ago, which is that WICB should give the reason (s) why Gayle should apologize. That is the moral way for WICB to achieve the high ground in this matter; otherwise, they are merely usurping the status. Make clear your reason(s) to Chris Gayle WICB; or you may well find yourselves as the one who should apologhize to Gayle and the West Indies cricketing community. Go for it!
West Indies Cricket has finally turned the corner. As the Director of the World’s First Cricket Hall of Fame, I have had the good fortune of meeting with most of the world’s greatest cricketers at the end of there careers, and on their way to be inducted into the Hall. It has been a pleasure ( 30 Years). I have concluded, from our conversations, that the problem with the W.I cricket was not the players but a lack of credibility( moral conviction) with persons responsible for W.I cricket. Now then, can we ask Sir Clive Lloyd CHF to publicly apologize to Dr. Holding CHF and then ask the WI board to identify statements Gayel made that were incorrect, have Gayle correct these statements or apologize, so we can get back to the game of cricket. I once heard a manager of the Indian cricket team comment: ‘regardless of who gets the victory, cricket will never be the same until WI cricket return to its glory days, when you defeat a good WI team you feel good’. ( Comment was made at the Cricket Hall of Fame in Hartford, Ct.) Keep talking Mr. Holding, you know the people are listening. One love. Mike C
Now I know why Clive never received a knighthood.
