Government to Develop Five-Year Medium-Term Development and Strategic Plan

Date:

Commencing in January 2012, with the assistance of the Caribbean Development Bank, Government will prepare a five-year Medium-Term Development and Strategic Plan.

In his annual New Year’s message, Prime Minister Dr. Hon. Baldwin Spencer said Government acknowledges that sound economic policies are essential for the restoration and maintenance of economic stability and that integrated planning is necessary to help mitigate the impact from exogenous shocks.

“To address this issue and to promote growth and development in Antigua and Barbuda, the National Economic and Social Transformation (NEST) Plan was formulated. This plan has had positive effects thus far on the economic activity within the country. However, the continuous challenges facing our economy require us to intensify activities on the other pillars of the NEST Plan in the pursuit of a national development agenda.”  The nation’s leader said.

Government will also build capacity and ensure sustainability of its planning and policymaking framework by providing training for key personnel within Government.

“This five-year mid-term plan will ensure that government has a comprehensive and integrated approach to economic and social planning with a view to ensuring structured economic growth and development.” Spencer said.

Recommendations on strengthening the institutional framework for strategic development planning in Antigua and Barbuda will also form part of the plan.

“This we believe is necessary to achieve optimal utilization of the country’s resources while preserving human rights, the environment, democratic values and the heritage of the country.” The Prime Minister said.

The Medium-Term Development and Strategic Plan will provide government with the tools necessary to meet its long-term priorities.

“I wish to encourage members of civil society to participate fully in the consultations that will help to form the development of the Medium-Term Development and Strategic Plan for Antigua and Barbuda.” The Prime Minister said.
