For many age 50 is the new 40. No better example of that was demonstrated than at the 50th birthday party of community stalwart and friend of CaribDirect, Darby Etienne.
As is typical with Darby he had to do it BIG! He was determined to pull out all the stops to treat his long time friends and family to the most memorable 50th they had ever attended… and in the opinion of this writer he achieved just that in more ways than one.
On Friday 3rd July, in spite of the inclement weather droves of specially invited guests flocked to the elegant “Tereza Joanne” Boat moored at King George V Dock. Guests were greeted to the sweet sounds of calypso music and many engaged in the age old ritual of hugging and kissing those family and friends they had not seen since the last funeral or wedding.
Once all 200 plus guests including fashion aficionado and actor, Saint Lucian born, Vincent McDoom (who flew in from France), and on the cue of the Master of Ceremonies, the accomplished JD Douglas, Darby made his grand entrance. There were screams and shouts all round as Darby Etienne, large as life itself made an unforgettable and stunning appearance dressed as a Commodore, the supreme authority on the Tereza Joanne.
Central to Darby’s speech was his love and appreciation for his family and friends, and his continued commitment to serving the Saint Lucian community.
Also present were Minister Counsellor for Saint Lucia High Commission Mr Albert Fregis, representing High Commissioner Ernest Hilaire, and Liberal Democrat member Ashburn Holder.
Entertainment was provided by Figaro and Natia while the highlight of the evening was Saint Lucian entertainer, Mr Borballist himself “JAUNTY” who flew in from New York and was backed by the ever popular Shawn Caribbean Band and Friends.
The cake cutting ceremony was equally rewarding to the guests as Darby and his lovely wife Samantha gracefully cut the cake and shared it lovingly with each other. They then performed a rather romantic dance to the delight of all including this writer.
The floor was then opened for dancing which went on until 3.30 am Saturday morning…from all appearances a good time was had by all. Well done Darby!
