The 25/8 Camp (One Extra Hour, One Extra Day) is an annual event, hosted by the Caribbean Hoopes organisation. There, athletes from the Caribbean have the opportunity to showcase their talent to earn college and university scholarships to the United States and North America. The 2015 edition was a success with several athletes receiving offers to attend school in United States on basketball scholarships.
The third edition of 25/8 brings together athletes from six Caribbean territories, along with coaches and scouts from schools in North America.
In attendance, with support from the Saint Lucia Basketball Federation (SLBF) and the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, are Pakel Gumbs and Joel Polius. Both young forwards, Pakel was the Most Valuable Player for Saint Lucia in the Windward Islands School Games in 2015. Joel, an employee at Le Sport, was one of the outstanding players in the KFC Commercial League last year. A member of five-time defending champions Courts Jets, he is also the defending SLBF Slam Dunk champion.
Pakel and Joel will be strutting their stuff and making invaluable connections over the course of the weekend, returning on Tuesday next. Earlier this week, prior to their departure, they met with acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, Dr. Anthony George.
