Dominican music legend Jeff Joseph has died. Jeff Jo as he was popularly known was for many years the lead singer in the Grammacks Band.
The band shot to fame in the early seventies and eighties with mega hits like “Mis Debaz”, and “Soukouyant”. The work of Jeff Joseph and the Grammacks helped to sparehead cadence music throughout the world and gave rise to Zouk and Compa music.
The highlight performances of Jeff Jo and the Grammacks came with their appearances during the “Tour de France” in 1977 and their half time performance at the Superbowl in Miami in 1979.
The band also performed at the first ever World Creole Music Festival and Jeff Jo was once again on stage at the fifteenth celebration of the WCMC in October of this year.
Jeff Jo reportedly died at 2:30 P.M. on Wednesdday November 23, 2011 at a hospital in Martinique. In addition to being a musical icon he also served as Dominica’s Goodwill Ambassador.
The music world has lost an icon and Dominica will miss one of the greatest musical voices of this generation.
The Dominican.net radio will pay tribute to Jeff Jo on Thursday November 24, with an eight hour music special featuring all of his major hits. This will be aired on TDN Radio from 10 a.m to 6 p.m.
