The type of legal document may be a contract or a Transfer document to buy or sell land, an account document from a Bank, or a Power of Attorney authorising a trusted person overseas to do something on your behalf.

For example, if you are buying property in the Caribbean, the overseas lawyer will prepare the contract and the Transfer documents and send them to you and ask that you make an appointment to see a Notary Public. The reason the overseas lawyer asks you to do so is in order that the Notary Public can check your identity to make sure the property will be registered in the correct name of the buyer at the Land Registry.
Dolores Rice – Notary Public will do so by verifying your passport and proofs of your address, to ensure that you are indeed the person who should be signing the documents and she will also check that the documents are correct. The documents should obviously include the correct names of the buyer and seller, an accurate description of the land, which may also have a plan, and should state the agreed price. When the Notary Public is satisfied everything is in order she will stamp her official seal on the document and also sign them.
If you sign a legal document before a Notary Public in England, you personally will not have to travel overseas.
