In the run up to President Barack Obama’s bid for re-election, his publicity team have opened an official Twitter account for the United States’ first lady. The account which was started today (Thursday 12th January) reached 70,000 followers in just 4 hours and at the time of writing has already racked up a whopping 119,721 followers.
The first lady was introduced to the Twittersphere with a first tweeting which said: “We’re excited today to launch @michelleobama as a new way for you to connect with First Lady Michelle Obama and the President’s campaign.” However the second tweet from the account was the first personal message sent by Mrs Obama to her followers. It was made clear that tweets which were sent personally by Michelle Obama would be signed ‘mo.’
Mr Obama’s account sent a welcoming message to the First Lady stating “It’s not every day we get to welcome the First Lady of the United States to Twitter—happy to have you,@MichelleObama!” The president’s Twitter account, which is followed by over 11 million people is regularly used as a tool in promoting his activities. Obama also took the innovative step of holding question and answer sections via his Twitter account which aimed to bypass ‘traditional mainstream media.’
