Home African Caribbean Black film producers urged to boost visibility on British TV

CaribDirect in conjunction with Sankofa Televisual held its final seminar for 2013, Caribbean (In)visibility on British Television and Cinema at the Dominica High Commission on Thursday 5th December 2013. The fact that African and Caribbean writers and film producers are marginalised from being featured on British television was supported by startling statistics on black people’s disproportionate taste for British shows alongside their white counterparts. High Commissioner for Dominica H.E Francine Baron praised the conduct and delivery of the event and expressed her satisfaction with the content discussed. There was a distinct call for action; to challenge the establishment to exercise greater parity when deciding on commissioning films to allow for better cultural representation on our screens. Updates will be provided in due course on the progress made with the possibility of a part two seminar to review, assess and discuss other pertinent matters concerning the African and Caribbean presence on UK television and cinema.
